I spent years answering questions on Laracasts forums and StackOverflow. Thousands of questions.

I'm not as active anymore. The forums now have AI bots that respond to questions, and honestly, most of the time the answers are good. The era of waiting for a human to help you is fading.

But here's what I've noticed: the developers who struggled to get help from humans are struggling the same way with AI. The problems aren't technical. They're about how developers approach problems, ask questions, and — critically — whether they understand the answers they receive.

The tools changed. The lessons didn't.

The Forum Days: What I Saw Over and Over

Not Reading the Error Message

The most common issue was never a lack of skill or Laravel knowledge. It was not reading the error message that was right there on the screen.

Someone would post a full stack trace, ask "why isn't this working?" — and the answer was literally in the first line.

"Class not found." The class name is misspelled.

"Column not found." The migration hasn't run.

"Route not defined." The route name has a typo.

The error message tells you exactly what's wrong. But developers see red text and panic. They immediately reach for help instead of stopping to read what their computer is telling them.

"It Doesn't Work"

The three most frustrating words: "It doesn't work."

No error message. No steps to reproduce. No code. No context. Just "it doesn't work."

When someone posted this, I knew we were in for a long back-and-forth. I'd have to ask ten clarifying questions just to understand what they were actually trying to do:

  • What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
  • What code did you write?
  • What did you expect to happen?
  • What happened instead?
  • What error message did you see?
  • What have you already tried?

The developers who answered these questions in their original post got help faster and better. The ones who made you play detective often never got their problem solved at all.

The Half-Hour Rule

At my very first company, I worked alongside senior developers. As an intern — and later as a junior developer — I'd run to them with every error.

Keep in mind, this was before StackOverflow. Googling for answers wasn't the reflex it is now.

Their response taught me something I've carried my entire career:

"Sit with it for at least half an hour. Go through the stacktrace. Try to understand what it's telling you. Then, if you still can't solve it, come back to us."

That's where the learning happens. That's where you build the skill to debug independently. That's where you develop confidence that you can figure things out on your own.

The Story That Pushed Me Over the Edge

I'm usually calm in forum discussions. But one time, I lost my patience.

Someone was trying to use Laravel Cashier v10 with Laravel 6. They kept saying "it doesn't work." I'd ask for specifics. They'd say "it just doesn't work." I'd ask what error they saw. They'd say "there's no error, it just doesn't work."

Finally, I gave up asking questions and just built it myself. Fresh Laravel 6 installation. Cashier v10. Reproduced the setup. Found the issue — the payment method couldn't be attached using client-side code; you needed a server-side workaround.

I created a full GitHub repository with working code and documented the solution.

Was I trying to be helpful? Yes. Was I also frustrated and trying to end the conversation? Absolutely.

The AI Era: Same Problems, Different Helper

Now AI responds to forum questions. Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot — they're everywhere. And they're good. Most of the time, they give correct, helpful answers.

So everything's solved, right?

Not quite.

The developers who couldn't articulate their problems to humans can't articulate them to AI either. The developers who didn't read error messages still don't read them. The developers who copy-pasted solutions without understanding them are now copy-pasting AI responses without understanding them.

The tool changed. The habits didn't.

"It Doesn't Work" — AI Edition

AI assistants are remarkably good at asking clarifying questions. They'll do what I used to do manually: ask for error messages, ask for code, ask for context.

But I see the same pattern play out. Someone asks a vague question. The AI asks for clarification. The person provides incomplete information. The AI makes assumptions and gives an answer. The person copy-pastes it. It doesn't work. They ask again with "it still doesn't work."

The back-and-forth is the same — it's just faster now.

If you want AI to help you effectively, you need the same skills you needed to get help from humans:

  • Include the actual error message. Copy and paste it. The whole thing.
  • Show your code. The relevant parts, with context.
  • Describe what you expected vs. what happened.
  • List what you've already tried.
  • Provide version information. Laravel version, PHP version, relevant packages.

Good prompts are just good questions. The format changed; the principles didn't.

The Copy-Paste Trap

Here's the new danger that didn't exist in forum days: the speed of AI responses makes it tempting to skip understanding entirely.

In forums, you'd wait hours or days for an answer. That wait time forced you to keep trying on your own. Often, you'd solve it yourself before anyone replied.

With AI, the answer comes in seconds. Why struggle when the solution is right there?

The problem: if you don't understand the solution, you can't verify it's correct. You can't adapt it when your situation is slightly different. You can't debug it when it doesn't work. You're not learning — you're just copying.

I've seen developers paste AI-generated code that's completely wrong for their situation. The AI confidently gave an answer based on incomplete information, the developer didn't understand it well enough to recognize the mismatch, and they wasted hours going down the wrong path.

How to Actually Learn in the AI Era

AI is an incredible tool. I use it myself. But using it well requires intention.

Understand before you implement. When AI gives you a solution, don't just copy it. Read it. Make sure you understand what each line does. Ask the AI to explain parts you don't understand. If you can't explain the solution to someone else, you don't understand it well enough.

Verify the answer. AI is confident even when it's wrong. Especially with framework-specific code, AI sometimes suggests outdated approaches or misremembers syntax. Cross-reference with official documentation. Test in isolation before integrating into your project.

Use AI to learn, not just to solve. Instead of "fix this error," try "explain why this error happens and how to fix it." Instead of "write this code," try "show me how to approach this problem and explain the tradeoffs." The goal is building your own understanding, not outsourcing your thinking.

Apply the half-hour rule first. Before asking AI, spend time with the problem yourself. Read the error message. Check the obvious things. Try to understand what's happening. Then, when you do ask AI, you'll ask a better question and you'll be able to evaluate the answer.

Be skeptical of easy answers. If the solution seems too simple for a problem you've been struggling with, pause. Maybe it is simple and you overcomplicated it. Or maybe the AI missed something important about your situation. Either way, verify.

The Skills That Still Matter

In a world where AI can write code, what skills still matter?

Problem articulation. Being able to clearly describe what you're trying to do, what's happening, and what you've tried. This is the same skill that made good forum questions. It makes good AI prompts. It also makes you a better developer — because often, articulating the problem reveals the solution.

Reading error messages. Still underrated. Still essential. AI can help you interpret error messages, but you need to actually read them and include them in your prompts.

Evaluating solutions. Knowing whether an answer makes sense for your situation. This requires understanding your codebase, your constraints, and the fundamentals of what you're working with.

Debugging. When the AI's solution doesn't work — and sometimes it won't — you need to figure out why. That's the same skill you always needed.

Fundamentals. Understanding how Laravel works, how PHP works, how HTTP works. AI can fill in syntax details, but you need the mental model to know what to ask for and whether the answer fits.

The Parallel

Looking back at my years in forums and looking at AI now, the parallel is clear.

The developers who asked good questions in forums — complete with error messages, code, context, and what they'd already tried — are the developers who prompt AI effectively now.

The developers who struggled to get help then — vague questions, "it doesn't work," no effort to understand the problem themselves — are struggling the same way now.

And the developers who copy-pasted forum solutions without understanding them? They're copy-pasting AI solutions without understanding them. The speed just makes the habit more dangerous.

The tools changed dramatically. The fundamentals of being a good developer didn't change at all.

Keep Learning

It's tempting to think that AI makes deep learning unnecessary. Why understand the framework when you can just ask?

But the developers who thrive will be the ones who use AI to accelerate their learning, not replace it. Who understand the solutions they implement. Who can debug when things go wrong. Who build mental models of how things work, not just collections of copy-pasted snippets.

The half-hour rule still applies. Sit with the problem. Try to understand it. Use AI as a tool, not a crutch.

The forum era taught me that the best developers are the ones who take ownership of their learning. That hasn't changed. It never will.
